Over the past 14 years of civil war, Liberia's schools were the target of repeated lootings and vandalism, resulting in the disruption of regular and sustained learning as well as the displacement of over 85% of the nation's population. Consequently, a majority of Liberian youth have had little or no schooling. Accelerated learning is an innovative program that recognizes the special needs of youth who have been out of a formal educational system for much of their lives. The program integrates their 'real-life' experiences and advanced cognition to reach a primary school level of education in less time than the conventional system.
LTI, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and USAID ALP partners, developed a training package for Accelerated Learning Master Trainers. The training package includes a comprehensive Master Trainers' Manual with extensive resource materials and 10 days of lesson plans. The January 25-28 training of trainers prepared the 50 Master Trainers to conduct training for approximately 800 ALP teachers over the next several months. "This Master Trainers' Training, especially the development of a comprehensive Trainers' Manual, will greatly assist us to implement the teacher training," said one Master Trainer.
USAID is funding partners (the International Rescue Committee, Save the Children/UK, and Christian Children's Fund) for the implementation of the Accelerated Learning Program that will target over 6,000 youth in 2005. LTI has procured 15,000 sets of primary textbooks for ALP teachers and students.
Additionally LTI will monitor results of accelerated learning to advocate for the expansion of the program nationwide.
