Program Description
After 11 years of armed insurgency in Nepal, a window of opportunity for peace and reconciliation opened in late 2006. In August 2006, USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) began a program to support a peaceful, democratic transition in Nepal. In close coordination with other USAID programs, OTI sought to positively support the evolving political situation by increasing access to information and diversifying public debate on issues critical to political transition and by increasing local-level engagement and participation in the peace process.
OTI officially handed over the Nepal Transition Initiative (NTI) program to the USAID/Nepal Mission on October 1, 2009. The NTI program will continue until August 2011 under the management of the USAID Mission's Democracy and Governance team. The program will monitor the progress of drafting the new Constitution and continue to assess emerging "hot spots" for new programming on social harmony, nonviolence, and community cohesiveness.
