New USAID Mission Director for Colombia Sworn In

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Liliana Ayalde as its new Mission Director for Colombia. Deputy Administrator Frederick W. Schieck presided at the event and administered the oath to Ms. Ayalde.
As Mission Director for Colombia, Ayalde will oversee a program totaling approximately $125 million annually to help strengthen democracy, promote human rights, eliminate coca and poppy production through alternative development, and provide assistance to internally displaced persons.
With more than 20 years of experience in international development, Ayalde joined USAID in 1983 under the International Development Intern program with the Office of Health, Population and Nutrition in USAID/Dhaka. In 1985, Ayalde was posted at USAID/Guatemala as the Health Development Officer and two years later became the Director for the General Development Office. Her following assignment was Director for the General Development Office to USAID/ Nicaragua. In 1993, Ayalde was the Deputy Director for the Office of Central American Affairs in the Bureau for Latin American and the Caribbean and became Director in 1995. Ayalde was Deputy Mission Director for USAID/Nicaragua and most currently Mission Director for USAID/Bolivia.
Ayalde holds a bachelor's degree from American University, and master's degree in International Public Health from Tulane University. She is married and has two daughters. Ayalde is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and has working knowledge of French.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
