USAID Provides Additional $2 Million to Guatemala for Food Assistance

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing an additional $2 million through the Food for Peace Program to the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) to assist food insecure communities affected by Hurricane Stan in Guatemala. This $2 million is in addition to $2 million already provided in response to the emergency, bringing the total U.S. contribution to the World Food Programs operation in Guatemala to $4 million.

This $4 million contribution provided by the USAID will provide 7,260 metric tons of U.S. commodities to help meet the urgent food needs of 285,000 Guatemalans whose crops, homes and livelihoods have been destroyed or damaged by flooding and landslides caused by the hurricane.

In addition, USAID has provided another over $5 million in emergency relief aid to Guatemala. This contribution includes $150,000 to USAID/Guatemala for the local purchase of emergency relief supplies and helicopter support, $660,986 in emergency relief supplies from their warehouse plus $129,254 for their transport, $3 million in grants to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the Center for Disease Control, $200,000 to the Pan American Health Organization for emergency health, water and sanitation activities and USAID/Guatemala redirected $1.1 million of program funds towards the emergency.

In early October, heavy and continuous rainfall associated with Hurricane Stan caused severe flooding and mudslides in Guatemala, affecting communities in the provinces of Escuintla, Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, Chiquimula, San Marcos, Chimaltenango, El Quiché, and Baja Verapaz.
