USAID Provides Assistance to Honduran Flood Victims

WASHINGTON, DC - In response to the damage associated with Tropical Storm Gamma and a low pressure system, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing $125,000 to Honduras for the purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies to the affected communities in Atlántida, Yoro, Cortés, and Colón.

Since November 18, USAID disaster experts have been in Honduras working with USAID/Honduras to assess impacts, evaluate needs, and coordinate with local disaster officials.

Heavy rains and flooding caused by the convergence of two tropical systems - Tropical Storm Gamma and a low pressure system that developed on November 16 near the Honduras/Nicaragua border - have flooded the northern departments of Gracias a Dios, Colón, Atlántida, Cortés, Yoro, Santa Bárbara, and the Bay Islands. According to the Government of Honduras Permanent Commission on Contingencies (COPECO), the heaviest rainfall has been concentrated in the cities of El Progreso, La Ceiba, Olanchito, and San Pedro Sula, causing damage to public infrastructure and communications systems. The government has also reported that Tropical Storm Gamma has affected 33,000 people and 21,000 people are in shelters. The storm has killed 32 people and 13 people are missing.

To date, USAID has provided over $200,000 in relief aid to Honduras during this hurricane season.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
